Size Guide
A quick reference to help you choose the right sizes for made to measure curtains, blinds and cushions. For full step-by-step measuring instructions, see our How to Measure guide.
Curtains
Made to measure curtains are made to your exact width and finished length. Standard lengths fall into three categories.
Sill Length
Finish just above or at the window sill.
Ideal for kitchen and bathroom windows.
Below Sill
Finish roughly 15–20 cm (6–8") below the sill.
A classic length that suits most rooms.
Floor Length
Finish just above the floor, typically 1–2 cm clearance.
The most formal, elegant look.
Measuring the width
Measure the full width of the fixture the curtains will hang from, excluding any decorative end finials. For made to measure curtains we add the necessary fullness and hems, so the width you give us is all we need.
- If you'd like the curtains to return to the wall (wrap around each side to block light), please contact us for advice.
- For a comfortable overlap where a pair of curtains meet in the centre, an extra 6–8 cm per curtain can be added.
Measuring the finished length
The finished length is the measurement from the very top of the curtain to the bottom hem. Measure in three places — left, centre and right — as floors and sills are rarely level, and choose the length that suits best.
Allowances vary by heading type, so the drop should be measured according to the heading you choose:
- Eyelet headings: measure from the top of the fixture to the hem, then add 3.5 cm (1 3/8") for the fabric above the eyelet.
- Gathered and pencil pleat headings: measure from the eye of the curtain ring or glider to the hem, then add 3.5 cm (1 3/8").
- Tab top headings: measure from the top of the fixture to the hem, then add the thickness of the fixture.
- Other headings: measure from the point where the curtain top will sit down to the desired hem position.
Positioning the fixture
For a typical window, we recommend the fixture:
- Overhangs the window by no less than 15 cm (6") on each side.
- Sits no less than 8 cm (3") above the top of the window recess.
Blinds
Made to measure blinds are fitted either inside the window recess or outside it. Choose the option that best suits your window and light control needs.
Inside the recess (recess size)
Measure the full width and drop of the recess in three places — top, middle and bottom for the width; left, centre and right for the drop. Use the smallest measurement.
We make any necessary deductions so the blind fits neatly inside the recess. Please don't make deductions yourself — just give us the recess size.
Outside the recess (exact size)
Measure the exact area you'd like the blind to cover. To minimise light leakage, we recommend the blind overlaps the window recess by at least 5–10 cm on each side and 5 cm above the top of the recess.
We make the blind to the size you specify with no deductions.
Measuring tips
- Use a metal tape measure and measure in centimetres to the nearest millimetre.
- Measure all windows individually — even windows that appear to be the same size.
- Watch for obstructions such as window handles, sockets, picture rails, tiles and radiators, and measure around them.
Cushions
Made to measure cushions are available in a range of sizes, made to your chosen measurements. Simply choose the size you'd like when configuring your order, or contact us if you need a size you can't find. See our cushion measuring guide for the practical steps.
Cushions can be made in the same fabric as your curtains or blinds for a coordinated look, and a choice of pad options is available.
Size Guide Checklist
- ✓Measure in centimetres with a metal tape measure.
- ✓Measure in three places and use the smallest measurement.
- ✓For curtains, give the fixture width and the finished length for your chosen heading.
- ✓For blinds, choose recess or exact size and measure accordingly.
- ✓Double-check all measurements before ordering.
